In its core, secondary victims share with the real victims some similar painful feelings like shame, sadness, fear, anger, grief, and anxiety; but of course it is different in its gravity. Similar to the ‘primary victims’ they are also carrying the scars of an offence for which they are not subjectively responsible.
Of course you can feel sad, no one wanted this to happen. You might experience sadness worrying about the survivor and how is this going to affect his/her life. You can also experience a sense of injustice or hopelessness.
What can you do?
But again, it is ok to experience those emotions but in a safe and self-care way. Please get help if the emotions are too strong or last for a long time.
