My body knows when it doesn't feel safe

Picture
We recommend you talk with your child their ‘early warning signs’ when feeling unsafe, like for example when they experience heart racing, feeling sick in the tummy, sweaty palms, feeling like crying. Your kid may like to come up with some ideas of their own. Because your child may be with a variety of people in any given day, ensure they learn to trust these ‘early warning signs’ and to always act upon them. Tell your child that they must tell you if any of their ‘early warning signs’ happen in any situation. Reinforce that you will always believe them and that they can tell you anything.
Many times the child will run away or be quiet because he/she doesn’t want to get into trouble or be called a tattletale. We need to teach them how to speak out safely and to tell a Safe Adult when they don´t feel safe.
