Identifying a Safe Person

“The most important thing for a child is to feel safe and secure. If that has been taken away
from the child, it is up to the parents and adults to bring them back to being children again,” UNICEF

Cultivating a healthy, trusting relationship with kids is actually one of the best protections against abuse.

How can a Safe Person be identified?

He or she is:
* Thoughtful:  actively listens and believes you when you tell them something.
* Trustworthy: dependable, you can count on him/her; someone you feel comfortable talking to.
* Respectful:  considerate and respects your feelings and boundaries.
* Helpful:  provides guidance and helps to find solutions to problems, but doesn't solve them for you.
* Caring:  wants the best for you and cares about your mental and emotional well-being and physical safety.
Being a Safe Person looks different for every situation, but it ultimately comes down to being trustworthy and ready to act in the child’s best interest.
This "safe hand" is a great tool to teach children to think about their Safe Adults. We recommend a mix of family members and people outside the family circle, like friends, teachers, coaches, neighbors, etc. It is important to have their full names and phone numbers so they can be contacted if needed.

To design your own, or your children's "safe hand", we've attached the same hand photo but with no text so you can print it out, fill it and take good care of it.

It is also very important to always have a safety plan. Kids need to know what to do and who to call when they don't feel safe.
